Finally some parts that are painted

I continued with sanding dust out of my parts and spray painting in the frigid cold of my enclosed balcony. The good news, there is some progress, the black parts pictured below are painted, and do not need more spray paint. They aren't perfect, but they are black and they will later be completely covered by carbon fiber decals anyway. The undertray is more intesting. I have painted the top of it gloss white. Why? As can be seen in the bottom reference photo, the leading edge of the undertray is blue to match the sidepods. On the left I have circled the area in question and on the right have outlined the area that will be blue. Since I will be painting these areas blue like the sidepods, I wanted to give them one coat of gloss white as an undercoat to ensure that the parts match the connecting sidepods in color

Wheels and painting

Did some more spray painting today. It's a bit risky considering it's like -20C here today.

Here are the painted wheels and bagged tires

Time to put them together

I'll be doing my first decal work in a very very long time. I first cut some unnecessary decal off to try it on a piece of the tree. After I'm sure I can do it still, I'll go for the logos inside the wheels

Well I've still got it, and my decal setting agent (though weak) works and doesn't destroy the decal or the surface.

What's next

Now that I'm actually painting the BMW Sauber, I've been wondering what to build next. Looks like I'll be making a foray into 1/20 scale.

I built a paint booth

I finally got sick of painting on the ground after all these years :) So I decided to build a paint booth

Here are my supplies. I picked up an awesome turntable cheap at Ikea

Let's get to it!

Modified the turntable too. More pics tomorrow while it is in use

Spray painting

Just the same old continuing painting

Here, I'm sanding off the dust that got into the primer. One reason I haven't worked on this model for so long is that I really don't have the proper conditions to spray paint here. Dust is less of a problem than I expected, but still a nuisance.

Taping some parts onto the box in preparation for the last coat of primer

And so it begins. Started spraying some black today. I test sprayed some Tamiya gloss black onto an unprimed piece of tree before trying on the kit. I would imagine the fact that our balcony currenly has sub-zero temperatures is heavily effecting the paint. As can be seen below, the paint has ran away from the edges. Not quite sure how to proceed at this point.

Painting some silver parts

The wheels have been painted. I also completed painting the exhaust headers, and have glued them to the engine block.

Happy New Year

Well the spray painting yesterday went pretty well. There was only a couple little pieces of dust in the paint that were very easy to sand off.

Here are the parts drying in my room:

Now that many of the parts are properly primed, I was able to take the wheels and put a first coat of silver on them. Tamiya chrome silver is pretty thin, so this will take a couple of coats. Also painted the other exhaust tip and got a little more paint on the exhaust headers.

These are parts that are now completely primed and waiting for paint

And here are the parts that still needed primer
